The Defender was introduced in the early 1980's as a coiled sprung 110" to replace the old 109". Coil springs made it a pure luxury on and off road even if the power plants were not up to the job. Soon Land Rover brought out the 90" to update the 88", with the same coil sprung axles and 5speed box with high ratio diffs these vehicles have become excellent workhorses. Now with the TDI and TD5 engines they are economic and powerful!
